if i can’t dance…

so it’s may day…here on the ole blog, i’d like to give a nod to the achievements of the labor movement (8 hour day, yo! weekends! …tho i’d prefer to work even less…).

may day also commemorates the anarchists of the haymarket affair, in addition to the strides of the labor movement - thus it is a day to remember that yes, our government has in the past, and continues today, to occassionally manipulate evidence and execute dissidents for political purposes:

on a lighter note, may day is also a cross-quarter day, which is the day right between the solstice and the equinox, and in the past had marked the beginning of summer (the summer solstice, which we now call the beginning of summer on june 21, used to be referred to as midsummer…ie a time to run away into the woods with your lover and be enchanted by Oberon, Titania and Puck).

it’s a day for revolution, a day to move toward a place of action, a day to parade (from L. parer “arrange, prepare, adorn”, pare “to trim by cutting close,”).

and since summer approaches rapidly, check out will smith, summertime, below.

….as emma goldman says, “if I can’t dance I don’t want to be in your revolution”
